Workshop Overview

Step into the world of wizardry through the lens of classical language! In this one-day workshop, students will uncover the Latin roots, prefixes, and suffixes behind some of the most iconic spells and character names in the Harry Potter universe. By analyzing how Latin was used to craft meaningful incantations and names, students will sharpen their understanding of etymology and word formation. Then, they'll apply that knowledge to create their own original magical terms. Along the way, they’ll gain a deeper appreciation for how Latin continues to shape the language we use today.

Student Outcomes:

  • Identify and analyze Latin roots, prefixes, and suffixes
  • Apply knowledge of etymology creatively to create their own unique constructions
  • Develop a deeper appreciation for classical languages and how they influence modern language
